Call for chapters: Working title is Space Bloopers! Astronomy and the Science Fiction Film
We are seeking essays for an interdisciplinary film study collection that, using basic knowledge
of astronomy, compares the “take” on the planets and astronomy in feature films from any era.
These films may be US or foreign films. While our focus is intended to be on space science here,
we take in other aspects of the science fiction film that contribute to the metaphorical meaning of
outer space in the human psyche.
Please send a 200 word summary of your proposed essay with a working title.
Keep essays to 10 – 15 single-spaced pages. MLA format.
Topics include but are not limited to such areas as:
* How the film (—) got its astronomy all, or mostly, wrong
* What the errors tell us about society at a given historical moment
* Why it does not matter that the film did not “get its astronomy right”
* The sociology of space or why female astrophysicists get coffee for men
* Who’s out there? Are the critters in space impossible?
* Space subjectivity—who and what (if anything) is/should be/ the POV?
* Earth and space: repeating all our mistakes into the cosmos?
* Can we “do” space without healing our earth? Ecology in SF films
* Impossible (?) biosystems in SF films
* Continuity errors a la Ed Wood in depicting astronomical entities
* Balancing poetry or “the sublime” and correct science in a film
…and other ideas from you.
Please get your ideas in ASAP to:
