    Hello Forum Members!

I recently posted information regarding the election for the community colleges representative in the MLA Delegate Assembly. The HEP Community Colleges Executive Committee is also interested in hearing from forum members who might be interested in serving on the Executive Committee. If you are interested in the committee, read on.

The HEP Community Colleges Executive Committee meets in person once a year at the MLA convention, but we are in contact through email and Zoom throughout the year (the contact is less than once a month for most of the year). Our primary task is to create a call for papers for the convention for the upcoming year. We create a panel that covers major issues that pertain to community colleges. We decide who the panelists are and one of our members chairs the panel. Other tasks include reaching out to new potential members of the executive committee (to ensure the life of the committee), to nominate potential members to represent community colleges at the Delegate Assembly, and to reach out to forum members via the Commons with any relevant information pertaining to community colleges. Commons communication suffered during the last couple of pandemic years, but I hope to revive forum communications on the Commons this year. The chair and secretary of the HEP Community Colleges Executive Committee are the group administrators of our Commons site.

If you are interested in supporting the committee with your service, be aware that your role would be for four years. You start as a member of the committee, then move into the secretary role, then move into being chair, and then move into the outgoing chair role. It is a great way of learning as you go. Incoming members have very few responsibilities and it increases as you go along. Most of the work is from December through March, and the rest of the year is very flexible. Another item to note is that you must be a current member of the MLA to be appointed.

We look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested!

If you are interested in serving, please reach out to Secretary Dr. Susan Jacobowitz and myself, Chair Dr. Grisel Y. Acosta, at the following emails: SJacobowitz@qcc.cuny.edu & grisel.acosta@bcc.cuny.edu.
