In California, PTF are largely responsible for instruction at the community college level, amounting to approximately 70-75% of the instructional staff. Other states have similar proportions. This roundtable proposal is designed to solicit quick analyses of various problems in the “definition” of part time work, institutional integration, academic rank and status taxonomies and the political and economic questions and contradictions that are exposed by a close look at the “language” deployed in the service of the de-professionalization of faculty in higher education: for instance, adjunct as term covering the majority of a workforce sector, part time as a term for folks who end up working 1.7 or 1.9 of a full time job, temporary as a term for a job that goes on for twenty years! Please correspond with me if you have ideas you think will work for this panel!

Here is the short form call:

    Discussion Group: Part-Time Faculty Members
Perspectives on the language used to describe employment status. Short, focused presentations that examine distinct frameworks of definition, institutional integration, and resistance. Short roundtable presentation ideas. by 15 March 2013; Margaret Hanzimanolis (hanzimanolism@fhda.edu).
