He is an Associate Professor at the University of Mary Washington where he teaches courses in Digital Studies and English. Specific research and teaching areas include electronic literature, video game studies, creative coding, and comics studies. He co-edited the collection Disability in Comic Books and Graphic Narratives (2016) and Playing the Past: History and Nostalgia in Video Games (2008). He has produced several computer-generated books including An Arthrogram (2015) and The Several Houses of Brian, Spencer, Liam, Victoria, Brayden, Vincent, and Alex (2017) and dozens of Twitter bots.
