Natural Time and Human Narratives: Competing Temporal Orders in the Premodern World
As a comparative study of clashing temporal orders in past contexts, this panel aims to challenge the stereotyped conception of the premodern as ponderous and static. Existing papers explore early empires’ endeavors to harness cosmic time to create universal immediacy, the relationship between reproductive temporality and that of prophecy in ancient Greek literature, and the mismatch between the temporalities of temples and their surrounding trees in Buddhist contexts.
If a bit of background information is helpful: I’m a member of the executive committee of the MLA Pre-14th-Century Chinese Language, Literature, and Culture Forum. To build a meaningful alternative venue to the Asian Studies annual conference, this committee has been foregrounding the MLA as a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogues. The guaranteed panels, given the creative freedom they afford, have been a fruitful space for experimentation.
No individual paper abstract is needed for this application, but I need to submit a short description of the panel by April 1st. If you are interested, please contact Heng ASAP (hd102@wellesley.edu).
