The mission of the TC Age Studies forum is to benefit the association by serving as a valuable resource for researchers and educators in the field of age studies. To achieve this goal, researchers explore the implications of age differences across the lifespan and the intersections of age with other categories of identity in literature, media, and culture, particularly focusing on considerations of aging and old age. Educators incorporate age studies concepts into pedagogies of literature, language, and writing. We encourage scholars to explore the impact of their own and others’ age-based stereotypes, the benefits and frustration of aging, and the potential inherent in aging and old age beyond the boundaries of essentialist, reductive valuations. The TC Age Studies forum supports examinations of cultural assumptions and research about age and age-based discriminations, including responses and resistance.

The next election for this forum’s Delegate Assembly representative will be held in the fall of 2023, and the forum’s executive committee will take up the matter of nominations for this election when it meets in January 2023. Though the executive committee is responsible for making nominations, it is required to nominate at least one candidate who has been suggested by the forum’s membership (unless there are too few suggestions). I write to encourage you to submit your suggestions for the forum’s assembly representative.

Please go to https://governance.mla.hcommons.org for additional information about this election and Delegate Assembly service. If you would like to suggest yourself or another forum member for nomination, please send the following information by e-mail (governance@mla.org) or by private message here on the Commons (@lneithardt): your name or the name of the member suggested; affiliation, department, and rank, if any; and a brief statement (100–200 words) of qualifications. The deadline for receipt of suggestions is 10 December 2022.

Yes! I want to encourage all of you to think about stepping into a more active role in this Forum. If you have never served as a Delegate, but often look for an opportunity to attend MLA, this is a great opportunity.  My underfunded Dean saw this as scholarly work, paid my registration, and provided travel funds during the time that I served as a Delegate, even when I was not speaking on a panel. I served as a Regional Delegate four years ago. Those were the pandemic years, so I cannot say that I saw much travel. But I did learn a lot more about our discipline and the association as a whole, and I was able to bring that knowledge back to my college to inform our program decisions.
