MemberEmily Kader

I am the Rare Book Research Librarian at Wilson Special Collections Library, which is part of University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I hold a PhD in English from Emory University, where I studied Irish and Appalachian literature and folklore. My current scholarship focuses on twentieth century book history in underrepresented communities as well as radical empathy in the special collections classroom. In my current position at UNC, I support research and teaching with rare books, archives, and special collections.  

MemberPetra McGillen

Petra McGillen works on German literature, media, and culture, ca. 1750 to 1900. Her research focuses on material histories of intellectual and cultural production. In particular, she explores the impact of different forms and media of notation—from doodles to writers’ notebooks, from lists to databases—on writing processes and modes of knowledge organization. Her first book, The Fontane Workshop: Manufacturing Realism in the Industrial Age of Print (New York; London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2019. New Directions in German Studies; 26) is the first in-depth study of the unpublished notebooks and other “paper tools” of the great German novelist Theodor Fontane. Her other research and teaching interests include print culture, book history, and the history of journalism.

Sarah Werner is a book historian, Shakespearean, and digital media scholar based in Washington, DC. Her latest project, Studying Early Printed Books, 1450-1800: A Practical Guide, will be published by Wiley Blackwell in the spring of 2018; the book will be accompanied by a website showcasing images of hand-press books and pedagogical resources. Werner worked for nearly a decade at the Folger Shakespeare Library as the Undergraduate Program Director and as Digital Media Strategist; in those roles she taught a regular semester-length research seminar on book history, created their research blog (The Collation), and led the overhaul of their website. She has a PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of numerous works on Shakespeare and performance, including Shakespeare and Feminist Performance (Routledge 2001), as well as on bibliography, digital tools, and pedagogy.

MemberAllison Bernard

Allison is a Ph.D. candidate in premodern Chinese literature at Columbia University. Her research interests include the intersections of literary and historical writing, book history and print culture, and the world of Chinese theater. Her dissertation engages the literary world of Kong Shangren’s seminal play The Peach Blossom Fan, using the play and its network of related texts to examine ideological resonances among stage, society, and writerly legacy. Before joining Columbia’s PhD program in the fall of 2012, Allison received her BA from Middlebury College (2010) and an MA from Columbia’s EALAC department (2012). She also has interests in Japanese theater, poetry, art history, and media studies.
