About
K. Allison Hammer is an interdisciplinary, cross-genre scholar and cultural critic. In their critical practice, they discover new connections between historical time periods and reveal the trace of the past in the present. Their work brings together a diverse archive of cultural objects, including film and media, literature, and performance, objects which are not normally viewed as visually or conceptually interrelated. Hammer’s groundbreaking insights are featured in their upcoming monograph, MASCULINITY IN TRANSITION, which will be published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2023. In this work, they take a critical approach to masculinity as a complex gender formation that is tied to different embodiments, subjectivities, sexualities, identifications, and ideologies. The book promises to transform and transgender the field of masculinities studies, and to have a wide, field-redefining impact on gender studies, trans studies, queer theory, and political theory more broadly. Hammer is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
