Gillian Lord received a B.S. in Spanish and English from Vanderbilt University (1993), an M.A. in Hispanic Literatures from the University of Virginia (1997), and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University (2001). She is currently Professor of Spanish and Linguistics at the University of Florida and Chair of the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department.
Dr. Lord works within the field of applied linguistics, and more specifically in the area of instructed language acquisition. Her research focuses on language learning and teaching, most often with a focus on the acquisition of the sound system of Spanish by English-speaking Learners. Dr. Lord’s work has appeared in journals such as CALICO, System, Hispania and Foreign Language Annals. She is the author of the monograph Language Program Direction: Theory and Practice (Pearson, 2013) and is currently co-authoring an entirely digital beginning Spanish text, called Contraseña, to be released by LingroLearning in fall of 2018.
In her time at the University of Florida Dr. Lord has won the departmental and college-level Teacher of the Year Awards (2002, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2017), the UF Service Learning Faculty of the Year Award (2010), and the UF Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award (2012), in addition to receiving the Waldo W. Neikirk Term Professorship in 2013-2014 and the Elizabeth Wood Dunlevie Honors Term Professor for 2016-2017.
Beyond UF, she has served as the Spanish Section Head for the American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators (2012-2016), and has also served on various College Board test-development committees. She currently serves on the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL)’s Executive Committee, and is the Vice President of the Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium.
