CFP: Volume on Frederick Rolfe (Baron Corvo), “Hadrian the Seventh”

    We are seeking submissions for an upcoming volume on the work of Frederick Rolfe, also known as Baron Corvo, with particular emphasis placed on his novel Hadrian the Seventh. The book will be published by Lexington Books in 2024. The chapters should be around 7,500 words. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    • The politics of Hadrian the Seventh/Frederick Rolfe;
    • Rolfe’s literary inspirations;
    • Hadrian the Seventh’s/Rolfe’s influence on later authors/artists/creators;
    • Rolfe and camp aesthetics;
    • Rolfe’s literary output in the context of gay literature;
    • Rolfe/Hadrian the Seventh in light of contemporary British literature;
    • The reception of Rolfe and his works;
    • Rolfe as a precursor to modernism;
    • Adaptations of the Hadrian the Seventh  (particularly Peter Luke’s Hadrian VII);
    • The narrative aspect of Rolfe’s novels;
    • Autobiographical motifs/aspects of Rolfe’s works;
    • Rolfe’s Catholicism;
    • Ecclesiastical imagery/motifs in Rolfe’s work;
    • Rolfe and decadence/aestheticism.

    Abstracts of c. 300 words should be sent to the editors by September 1st, 2022. If your submission is accepted, we well expect the complete chapter by June 1st, 2023.
