Teaching as a Profession is one of only three forums classified as “HEP,” or Higher Education and the Profession. The focus of our forum is on the intersection of criticality and classroom practice as it informs pedagogy across fields and approaches. We invite diverse voices to engage in these conversations, both during our convention panels and here on the Commons. The work that this forum does to examine, address, and engage with the issues that educators face today is essential to both the MLA and the scholarly community at large.

    Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to call your attention to three CFPs for the 2024 MLA convention that may interest you.

    • The Range of Contingency: Models and Strategies for Success: As the nature of contingency evolves with non-tenure track faculty assuming increased responsibilities within the academy, what models or strategies can help to assure fair and humane working conditions? Success stories and proposals are welcome. Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, 1 March 2023. Please send a one-paragraph abstract and a cv. For additional information, please contact James R. Britton, U of Miami (jbritton@miami.edu).
    • The Service Requirement: Contingency, Marginality, and Growing Expectations: Contingent faculty members, particularly those from marginalized groups, disabled or other, have increasingly taken on service roles within their institutions. We invite contingent faculty members to share, interrogate, or theorize their experiences. Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, 1 March 2023. Please send a one-paragraph abstract and a cv. For additional information, please contact Laura Hartmann-Villalta, Johns Hopkins U (lhartm13@jhu.edu).
    • Contingent Shakespeare: This non-guaranteed, collaborative session from the LLC Shakespeare Forum and the Committee on Contingent Labor in the Profession foregrounds contingency, precarity, and instability in and around Shakespeare. 1p. abstract, cv to Sujata Iyengar. Deadline for submissions: Friday, 10 March 2023. For additional information, please contact Sujata Iyengar, U of Georgia (iyengar@uga.edu ) or Hatem Akil, Valencia College (hatem@akil.org).
