    “20th-Century \’Saints\’ and Struggle”

If “spirituality” relates to a concern for the transcendent and a “saint” is one who has made a significant contribution to a spiritual tradition, this panel focuses on 20th-century saints whose spirituality intersected significantly with social and political struggle. Abstracts demonstrating familiarity with spiritual writings and making claims for their relevance to social and political issues will be preferred. Figures whose writings might be considered include: Dietrich Bonhoffer, Martin Buber, Dorothy Day, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Thomas Merton, Yusuf al-Nabhani, Sayyid Qutb, Seraphim Rose, Alexander Schmemann, Maria Skobtsova, Leo Tolstoy, Desmond Tutu, Simone Weil…

Please send 200-250-word abstracts for this guaranteed session by 15 March 2023 to Elizabeth Scarlett scarlett@buffalo.edu and to Ken Seigneurie: kseigneu@sfu.ca
