The Romanian Forum of the MLA invites proposals for presentations on its panel at the 2021 Convention of the Modern Language Association (Toronto, January 7-10, 2021): Eugène Ionesco’s Theater of Language
The year 2021 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first performance of Eugène Ionesco’s classic work of the Theater of the Absurd, The Lesson. This panel explores some of the key topics that Ionesco takes up in that play. In particular we invite papers that deal with his engagement with language, politics, and performance as well as the implications of migration in his writings for the theater and in his essays and other texts. We invite a broad range of proposals that deal with Ionesco’s writings in Romanian and in French as well as their reception and lasting legacy. His reflections on power, propaganda, totalitarianism, the role of language in communication, among other key topics, have not diminished in importance since 1951. This panel also provides a possibility to look at Franco-Romanian connections through the lens of Ionesco’s work.
Please send an abstract limited to 300 words to Julia Elsky (firstname.lastname@example.org), with a brief bio limited to 150 words, by March 1, 2020. Please note that to take part in an MLA panel you must be an MLA member by April 7, 2020.
