CFP MLA Convention 2022. Trans* Studies and Religion.  Seeking papers on the convergence of trans* studies and religion in literature or theory. Guaranteed session of the TC Forum on Religion & Literature. The late trans artist Sophie once said in an interview, “An embrace of the essential idea of transness changes everything, because it means there’s no longer an expectation based on the body you were born into, or how your life should play out and how it should end. Traditional family models and structures of control disappear.” Seeking papers on the ways in which that “embrace” shapes literature and theory that engage religion.  Possible topics include (but are by no means limited to) trans* themes in spiritual autobiographies, trans* figures within specific spiritual traditions (e.g. two-spirits, hijra), or ways in which trans*ness shapes discussions of the gendering of God.250-word proposals and CV to pederson@bu.edu by March 8.
