This forum has been created to enable full discussion of a resolution calling on the MLA to honor the Palestinian civil society call for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions until Israel respects its obligations towards the Palestinian people under international law and norms of human rights. The resolution will be debated publicly at the MLA conferences in 2015 and 2016 and is scheduled for a Delegate Assembly vote in 2017. This will enable members to inform themselves on the issues and arguments and to engage in exhaustive deliberation on the issue. We encourage free and open discussion on this forum, though expect that the normal rules of etiquette will be respected by all contributors, despite the controversial nature of the topic.

The discussion in the group is open to all readers, but only logged-in MLA members may contribute. Please see also the discussion taking place in the group Scholarship, Censorship, Exclusion.

Invitation to BDS Working Group: first meeting at MLA 2015, Jan 9 2:30-5:00

If you would like to work actively over the next two years towards gathering support for the MLA resolution to endorse the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions, please contact David Lloyd (david.lloyd@ucr.edu) or Rebecca Comay (comay@chass.utoronto.ca) directly.  We are forming a working group to strategize on how to build support at the MLA and beyond for the boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

Any MLA member interesting in working for passage of the resolution is welcome to join. We will hold an off-site meeting of those who wish to play an active role in this campaign on Friday, January 9, 2.30-5.00 pm, at Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre, Boardroom 2050.  The SFU Harbour Centre is an 8 minute walk from the Four Seasons Hotel and very close to item #2 on the MLA Conference Hotel Map (Delta Vancouver Suites).  Please join us at this meeting.

NOTE: this meeting is not for discussion of the merits of the resolution, or of boycott as a strategy in general, all of which will be open for discussion at the Delegate Assembly meeting, 1 pm, Saturday. It is intended only as a working meeting in support of the resolution.
