The non-profit digital scholarly database The Literary Encyclopedia was founded in 1998 to provide a scholarly online resource for university-level teaching and research. We are in the process of expanding our offerings in the field of African American Literature and Culture

We’re interested in commissioning reference articles (2,000-2,500 words) on major Black writers and works, along with periods and topics in African American cultural history. We welcome submissions from both established scholars and advanced graduate students.  All essays are reviewed by our editorial board on a rolling basis, with a quick turn-around for publication, usually within 4 weeks of receipt.

Currently our collection of articles on African American works and authors is incomplete but growing. Examples of essays still needed include critical biographies of Martin Delany, Alain Locke, Ntozake Shange, Toni Cade Bambara, and others. We also seek articles on major works such as C.W. Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition, Hurston’s Jonah’s Gourd Vine, Gwendolyn Brooks’s A Street in Bronzeville, and many additional works in all genres.

Detailed information on our holdings can be found on our searchable homepage at https://www.litencyc.com/ As co-editor the African American Literature and Culture volume, I invite interested scholars to contact me with questions or essay proposals at jpc@uakron.edu

    Thank you,

    Patrick Chura, Ph.D.
