Call for Papers for a guaranteed session sponsored by the LLC Italian American Forum at the Modern Language Association (MLA) Annual Convention on January 9-12, 2020, in Seattle, Washington.

This panel welcomes interdisciplinary approaches to texts in different media and genres that map and reflect intersections of diverse sexualities, abilities, genders, and ethnicities/races, in that heterogeneous space where Italian and U.S. cultures themselves intersect. While the inherently interdisciplinary nature of Italian American Studies has long been explored, this panel seeks to denote ways in which interconnected, co-constitutive structures of power and politics of (self-)representation are unearthed or articulated in various texts by Italian Americans ranging from poetry to film and including public monuments, historical preservation initiatives, and translations. Through the application of intersectional lenses, papers may explore the significance of multiple identity markers and categories in relation to one another in the richly varied context of the Italian American experience, also in ways that may have anticipated the current intersectional turn in academia.

Please send 250-word abstract and current CV by March 25, 2019 to Jessica Maucione, maucionej@gonzaga.edu. Responses to individual submissions will be sent out by the beginning of April. All prospective presenters must be current MLA members by no later than April 2019.
