    Short description:

The literary, social and political debates around Benito Pérez Galdós’s work in Catalonia. The role of Catalonia. The impact of Galdós’ literary writings and linguistic politics in Catalonia.

This session aims at interrogating the literary, social and political debates around Benito Pérez Galdós’s public and literary life in Catalonia. How was his work received by Catalan readers? What was the critics’ role in this reception? Galdós had a strong relationship to Catalonia: not only did he visit the region and meet with several literary critics and authors (Josep Yxart and Narcís Oller, among others), but he also wrote about it. Catalonia as a region, Catalan politicians (such as Prim), and Catalans in general were very much present in his work. In addition, Galdós was also interested in linguistic politics and had strong opinions about the literary use of Catalan and Castilian. We are interested in papers that investigate new approaches regarding the relationship between Galdós and Catalonia. Topics might include (but are not limited to): the debates regarding the use of Catalan language between Galdós and Oller, the reception of Galdós’s theater in the Catalan newspapers, Catalan activists in the Episodios Nacionales, Galdós and his Catalan critics, Catalonia’s territory in Galdós’s novels, Galdós’s theater in Catalonia.
