The new MLA Forum on Global Hispanophone is delighted to invite submissions for our inaugural session/s, which will take place at the MLA Annual Convention in Austin, Texas, on 7-10 January, 2016. (Note: these Calls for Papers are also available on the MLA website).
Global Hispanophone Literatures and Postcolonial Theory
The term ‘global Hispanophone literatures,’ while literally referring to Spanish-language literary production around the world, designates more precisely the (mainly but not exclusively) Spanish-language literary production of the world, particularly Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, and parts of Northern Morocco: that is, former Spanish colonies beyond Latin America and the Caribbean. Spanish colonialism in Asia and Africa coexisted with, while often differing from, the imperial expansions of other European nations. This panel will assess the value and/or the limitations of postcolonial theory—which has had significant critical currency in relation to British and French colonialisms—in the context of the Hispanophone literary productions of these lesser-studied areas, offering a space for papers addressing points of friction or points of convergence. Please submit a 2-page abstract by March 10, 2015 to Adolfo Campoy-Cubillo at firstname.lastname@example.org and to Raul Marrero-Fente at email@example.com
Theorizing the Global Hispanophone
From a critical and theoretical standpoint, what might the category of Global Hispanophone entail for the field of “Hispanic Studies”? How might the inclusion of one or more of the geographical areas involved—the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, parts of Northern Morocco—modify, or transform, our approach to the field? What might a persuasive theorization of the Global Hispanophone encompass? These are some of the questions that the panel aims at addressing, as we consolidate this new forum. Please submit a 2-page abstract by March 15, 2015 to Joyce L. Tolliver at firstname.lastname@example.org and to Benita Sampedro Vizcaya at Benita.email@example.com
The Members of the Executive committee of the Forum on Global Hispanophone will review all proposals received before the due date, and will communicate the decision by March 30, 2015. Please note that all authors of the selected proposals must be active members of the MLA by April 7, 2015.
