The aim of this panel is to consider literary relations, cross-cultural engagements, and intertextualities involving cultures and languages of the global south addressing events of transnational impact and affect. Events may include solidary moments of hope (for example: the “occupy” movement), or trauma (9/11, London 7/7). Papers can cover a range of literature, film, or theory, but at least one of the cultural productions should be from the global south. Among other possibilities, panelists can examine ways in which the texts might inflect ongoing conversations about cosmopolitanism, globalism, and postcoloniality. Panelists can also reflect on the implications of such cross-cultural dialogues and intertextualities for comparative studies in the 21st century. Panel will take place at the January 2014 MLA Convention in Chicago. Abstracts of 250 words or less, and brief CV, to Olakunle George (Olakunle_George@Brown.edu) by March 15, 2013.
