This panel seeks papers that address the environment in literature and film of the Early Americas through a Hemispheric perspective (South, Central, North, Caribbean). Papers may address the representation of natural catastrophes and theories on climatology, the representation of endemic vs. invasive species in fiction and travel narratives, analyses of indigenous cities vs. the wild, and ecocritical readings of textual and visual materials of the Early Americas. Please note that this is a non-guaranteed proposed special session. The deadline for initial submissions is March 18, 2016. After this deadline all participants will be promptly notified so that the special session proposal may be submitted directly to the MLA. All panelists must be MLA members.
