  Imagine that humans had evolved not on dry land\, but in the depths of the
  ocean. What would human culture look like? How could it be transmitted? Co
 uld there be anything resembling literature\, without the possibility of in
 scription? Could there be such a thing as aquatic circulation?</p><p>This b
 rief speculative thought-experiment is meant to foreground the role of mate
 rial infrastructures in the creation\, preservation\, and circulation of li
 terature and related symbolic forms and their intercultural transfer. The t
 heme of the Eighth Sino-American Symposium on Comparative and World Literat
 ure is meant to focus our attention on the complex\, triangular relationshi
 p between materiality\, infrastructure\, and circulation  in comparative an
 d world literature. We welcome papers on literature and related media such 
 as cinema\, television\, and visual and material cultures. Related topics m
 ay include:</p><p> </p><ul><li>World systems of cultural exchange and trans
 fer</li><li>Critical infrastructure studies</li><li>Interrogation of artifa
 cts</li><li>Depictions of materiality\, infrastructure\, and circulation in
  literature and cinema</li><li>Migration as the material basis of cultural 
 formations</li><li>Translation as cultural transfer</li><li>Scriptworlds\, 
 Scriptibility and Legibility</li></ul><p>Papers delivered at the Symposium 
 will be considered for a special issue of <em>Comparative Literature Studie
 s</em> on this topic.</p><p>Participants in the symposium will receive lodg
 ing for Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday\, and most of their meals to be in
 cluded in the conference registration of $100.</p><p>Please submit an abstr
