MLA Convention Session on Modern American Drama and Racism

The Eugene O’Neill Society organized Session 559, a round-table discussion scheduled for next Saturday afternoon at 3:30: “The Duality of Eugene O’Neill on Race.” Panelists will explore why O’Neill was seen as a progressive in the 1920s and 1930s and yet his plays seem racist today. Although the discussion will begin with a focus on O’Neill, we expect it to range widely over modern American drama and the development of our understanding of racism over the past century.
