- Abstract:
- “Real revolution of painting’s and fashion’s chromatics” according to one of Edmond de Goncourt’s diary entry written on February the 18th 1877, this article comes back to the flaming yellow of Henri Regnaults’Salomé. There, I show that the luminous Japanese shade – which was seen in turn as a question of chemistry, of contrasts of colors and as a matter of musicality by visitors and critics – is a perfect fit for the fin de siècle aesthetics. In consequence, yellow would be the audacious shade of a decadent era.
