    Abstract:
Wang, LK and Wang, MHS (2022). Reduction of color, turbidity, odor, humic acid, metals, EDB, coliform and TTHM by adsorption, flotation and filtration. In: “Evolutionary Progress in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)”, Wang, LK and Tsao, HP (eds.), 4 (10D), STEAM-VOL4-NUM10D-OCT2022. 51 pages. October 2022., Lenox Institute Press, Massachusetts, USA. ....ABSTRACT: This publication introduces an innovative adsorption-flotation-filtration process system for groundwater decontamination, industrial water supply or potable water purification. A continuous PAC-DAF-filtration system was operated at 40 L/min, using 1.5 mg/L of anionic polymer and 2.5 mg/L of collector for treatment of a purposely contaminated groundwater. The influent, effluent and float were sampled for water quality analysis. The continuous process system reduced 100% color (from 25 CU), 96% turbidity (from 4.5 NTU), 100% iron (from 35 ppb), 100 % of manganese (from 1 ppb), 98% humic acid (from 3200 ppb), 100% EDB (from 1.2 ppb), 98% TTHM (from 1265 ppb), 99.6% odor (from 500 TON), 100% mercaptans (from 730 ppb S), 100% lead (from 6 ppb), and 100% arsenic (from 1000 ppb). Nearly 100 percent of spent PAC (from 250 mg/L) and 100 % total coliform (from 3 colonies per 100 mL) were also removed by PAC, DAF and filtration. The float consistency was 7.2 %. DAF was controlled at 30 percent recycle flow, and 0.5 CFH ( 0.014 m3/hour) air flow. The sand filter was packed with 27.94 cm of quartz sand (E = 0.36 mm, U = 1.65) and operated at 101.75 Lpm/m2. The new PAC-DAF-filtration process system has been proven to be feasible for groundwater decontamination, industrial water supply, or potable water treatment. The data from this research can be applied to any manufacturer's PAC, DAF clarifiers, or filters.
