- Abstract:
- Jewish rights in the Balkans constituted a significant concern for Western European Jewish elites in the nineteenth century, in particular for the Alliance Israélite Universelle. For the organisation, defending these rights was a duty not only for France but for Europe as a whole. International advocacy shaped the self-understanding of French Jewish political leaders as Europeans. However, their legacy was ambiguous: if Jewish activists in the Balkans adopted many of their political strategies, they increasingly questioned French Jewish activists’ idealised vision of Europe.
