    Abstract:
    Michele Amari's "Storia dei Musulmani di Sicilia" (1st ed. 1854–1872, 2nd ed. 1933–1939) has for several generations been a key reference work for the study of Muslim rule and the Islamic presence in medieval Sicily and southern Italy. In medieval studies, however, a thorough examination of its underlying premises has only begun in recent years, focusing on Sicily. In the first part of the article, Amari's specifically Sicilian historical narrative becomes the starting point for considering the connection between discourses on Orientalism and debates in the context of Italian national state formation. In the second part, the particular interpretative approaches adopted in Amari’s presentation of the Muslims and their activities on the Italian mainland are analysed for the first time, before finally assessing their (dis-)continuous impact. This combination of textual analysis and the study of the research history demonstrates that Amari's southern Orientalism, in its specifically Sicily-centric, patriotic and Eurocentric form, has proved highly persistent and still in part continues today without further questioning.
