- Abstract:
- This dataset contains the names/appointments of all (sub)prefects in the Dutch and Northwest German departments of the French Empire, c.1809-1814. It is a so-called Palladio-project, containing visualizations which can be viewed with Stanford University's 'Palladio' application, at http://hdlab.stanford.edu/palladio/ The data set is based on name lists as published in the annual 'Almanach impériale'. Newspapers, such as the 'Allgemeine Zeitung', 'Journal du Soir', 'Journal de Paris', and 'Journal de l’Empire' reported on newly appointed (sub)prefects, thus providing insight into their personal mobility. These data have been enriched with biographical information from various (online) sources. Findings are published in 'Napoleonic governance in the Netherlands and Northwest Germany' (Palgrave Macmillan's series 'War, Culture and Society, 1750-1850').
