- Abstract:
- The essay positions John Heartfield (1891-1968) as the kind of artist -- or better, image-maker or imager -- that Vilém Flusser described in his book, Into the Universe of Technical Images. The photomontages, for which Heartfield is best known, overturn the media priorities of the newspaper in which they appear. More like theatre or film, they prioritize vision, and build in sound effects. In keeping with Flusser's understanding of the coming telematic society, they exert no authority. Instead they quite deliberately build, issue by issue, a consensus, an admiration for, trust in what is clearly an invention.
