- Abstract:
- In support of Gert Biesta’s principle that teacher training must be about “the formation and transformation of the person” and her “singularity” and not “the production of things,” I provide material relevant to any center where practitioners of a new deep teaching are trained by studying the experience of one professor who wants to transform his practice. In the journal Pedagogy, Colin Jager, a scholar of Romanticism, presents his “unapprehended” pedagogy—the term is taken from the poet Shelley--which stems from Jager’s disappointment with the pressure exerted on education by instrumentalized values and outcomes. As Biesta predicts, Jager’s is a creative process involving his resolve but also his “hesitation” as he manifests his singular uniqueness and readies students to do the same. I try to understand Jager’s teaching lifeworld by considering his scholarly work on romanticism along with his classroom project. Since, from a multidimensional pluralistic point of view, belief must be respected as a fundamental aspect of identity, this leads to consideration of the place of students’ spiritual lives in their singularity. And I ask what predicaments will arise as this path is followed in a non-denominational classroom. In conclusion, I present a short thought experiment. A character from the Romantic era whom Jager analyzes in his academic work, Fanny Price of Mansfield Park, is imagined as being representative of a young person ready to benefit from Jager’s—and Biesta’s-- classrooms.
