In his brief life, Frederick Palmer (F.P.) Tracy was a minister and politician who had a major impact on antislavery issues. His keen intellect was matched only by his talent as a renowned orator. He had an irrepressible belief in human rights, not only for slaves but for Native Americans. He was greatly influenced by the values, culture, and history of New England, particularly Massachusetts, as well as political events in contemporary Europe. These were principles that he carried with him to California and that he helped to incorporate into the Republican Party of that state.
