    Abstract:
    Handout for a presentation at the Tech Day Plus regional conference of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) at Otemae University in Osaka Prefecture on September 28, 2013. Conservative and cautious institutional cultures can add to language barriers to limit the international recognition of a university's accomplishments. Universities in non-Western countries may take pride in their autonomy and seldom grant tenure or listen to foreign faculty voices. Yet they recognize that global university rankings affect their prestige and the quality of foreign student applicants. This gives foreign faculty as well as internationalists an opportunity to advocate for an ethic of openness along with specific measures outlined in this handout, and to be heroes as the institution receives greater due recognition.
    Notes:
    This 2-page handout summarizes investigations into the criteria of major global university ranking organizations and Google Scholar. The author has published papers such as "Setting up an Effective Google Scholar Profile" (2017) and "University Website Optimization and Google Scholar for Academic Recognition" (2015), which showed how 7 of 8 eight prominent private universities in the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto region were underperforming in global rankings.
