    Abstract:
    CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE CULT OF ANTINOUS IN THE ROMAN SETTLEMENT AT SOČANICA This Roman settlement, located on the territory near Sočanica, was parтly explored around the 1950’s. Systematic excavations, headed by E.Češkov, resulted in quite a large number of mobile and immobile finds, helped to form a clearer picture about the history, economic system and urban layout of the settlement known as Municipium DD. With this work we want to draw attention to a series of specifications that are characteristic for this location. Particular attention has been devoted to the temple of Antinous and to the complex of edifices that had surrounded it. This engineering construction has been analized in the context of numerous architectural undertakings of Hadrian’s times. We have tried to reconstruct some aspects of Antinous cult in the Municipium DD on the basis of the epigraphic material and the situation on the site itself. Apart from Lanuvium, Carnuntum and Hadrian’s villa in Tivoli, where this cult has been epigraphically confirmed, the temples consecrated to Antinous are rare in the western part of the Roman Empire. Judging by the spatial configuration, the complex of edifices that constitute the temple as well as the edifices that surround the temple bear certain analogy with the sacred complexes of emperor Hadrian on the European territory of Greece. In Municipium DD there occurred the binding of the cult of Antinous, in the form which it was practised in the West, with the cult practices conducted in Greece. While in the western parts the followers of the cult belonged to the circle of Emperor’s closest associates, imperial slaves and freed slaves, in the eastern parts of the empire the initiators were senators of Greek origin who in this way wanted to show their devotion to the Emperor. Latest explorations have shown a possible link between the cult of Antinous and the cult of Asclepious.
