    Abstract:
    Most of the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney during the Beatle years were largely written by one or the other of the two. But because they acted as mutual editors and occasionally combined segments by each of them into one song, and because the songs were published as if they were true collaborations, the distinct individual styles of Lennon and McCartney as composers have been obscured. By analyzing four of their songs---an actual collaboration ("I Want to Hold Your Hand"), a song known to be solely by Lennon ("No Reply") and another known to be solely by McCartney ("Yesterday"), and finally, a song of which their memories of who did what conflict ("In My Life"), this article attempts to establish some of the characteristics of their individual styles.
