    Abstract:
Up to the 20th century, Bernal Diaz del Castillo's Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España had been considered the most trustworthy historical account of the conquest of Mexico. The last century saw a radical shift in how this work was read. Various authors and critics have considered the Historia verdadera to be the very first novel of the American continent. This conference traces the history of the reception of this work since it was first published in the 17th century. Following the conference theme of Hernan Cortés' influence as writer, this work also evaluates the literary implications of Christian Duverger's thesis of the Historia verdadera as a 16th century novel by Hernan Cortés
