    Abstract:
    Edward Said was flabbergasted that students of literature spoke in a language incomprehensible to him, a professor of literature and a president of the MLA. This essay tries to recover the study of literature from the morass of jargon and free, through its copious endnotes, literary scholars from their inferiority complexes as minor philosophers or varieties of social activists or from becoming psychoanalysts by proxy. The author makes a case for studying literature for literature's sake and makes gentle fun of pedants in the endnotes.
    Notes:
    This essay is an attack against Marxist theories of literary production and consumption. It is an introduction to literature for those who are beginning their literary careers as college students as well as being an attack against false pedants. The endnotes debunk contemporary fixations in literature scholars.
