My dissertation, Among Aliens Abroad, uncovers the techniques used by the Spanish Empire to translate the indigenous languages and cultures of the New World. It reveals how Spanish colonization depended on erasing and selectively rewriting native languages. My research is supported by the 2019-2020 CLIR/Library of Congress Mellon Dissertation Fellowship in the Humanities in Original Sources, the 2019 Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium Fellowship, and the 2020-2021 University Graduate Continuing Fellowship from the University of Texas. I draw upon digital resources such as Voyant, Palladio, and Python, as well as physical and digital collections in the Americas and Spain, including John Carter Brown Library, the LLILAS Benson Library, the Harry Ransom Center, the Huntington Library, the National Library of Spain, and the Library of Congress, each of which has important collections containing New World indigenous grammars, dictionaries, travel accounts, translated catechisms, and “histories.”
I’m the Senior Director for Library Technology and Digital Strategies and Chair of Digital Partnerships & Strategies in UF’s Libraries. I provide leadership for technology and partnerships between the UF Libraries and partners across the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally. I work closely with library colleagues to create and sustain supports for collaborations for building collections, community, and capacity, including for the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) and LibraryPress@UF. My work is geared towards enabling a culture of radical collaboration that values and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Brea (Breanne) Henson is the Administrative Specialist for the Public services Division of University of North Texas Libraries. Ms. Henson assists librarians by assessment, event, instruction, and research support. Current projects that she is assisting with include an annotated bibliography on Liaison Pedagogy with Julie Leuzinger; The UNT Libraries Information Fluency Initiative Curriculum Mapping Project with Greg Hardin; Management Workshop Series for Public Services Librarians with Mary Ann Venner. She is currently working on an extensive research project, titled “Moving Toward a Praxis of Zen Librarianship: Expanding Librarianship with Mindfulness.” She presented a poster on this topic at the 2017 Texas Library Association Conference. She also continues research on Irish mythology and Celtic spirituality; pagan decadence in weird and Gothic literature; and theories related to linguistic othering, power, violence. Her aim is a humanities faculty-librarian position in the next few years.
I am the Rare Book Research Librarian at Wilson Special Collections Library, which is part of University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I hold a PhD in English from Emory University, where I studied Irish and Appalachian literature and folklore. My current scholarship focuses on twentieth century book history in underrepresented communities as well as radical empathy in the special collections classroom. In my current position at UNC, I support research and teaching with rare books, archives, and special collections.
