A quick question for MLA Commons users: what are you trying to do here? There’s a lot that I can help with, though pointing me in a particular direction might be more useful.

Hi Dan! I am interested in the providing links and relevant media articles and adjunct initiatives to the MLA part timers, so that they are more familiar with what is happening out in adjunctville. So–building community, fostering an online spot where we can begin a conversation about what MLA can reasonable do to serve this population better… announce travel funding, build linkages with allied groups (women in the profession, two-year colleges, teaching as a profession). I would also like to be able to administer or moderate the PTF group,–if that is the way to be able to propose a “statement” of purpose of the group, or an invitation, or something.

Hi Margaret! A question: the PTF group is private & I’m not a member, so I can’t see who’s the admin for the group. (It might be nice for private groups to show who’s in charge to non-members? Not sure about that.) Are you the admin and having problems, or do you need to be set as the admin?

What you want to do with the group seems like it could work pretty well with a blog, and I see that you’ve created one. Is that connected to the group? Again, as someone who’s not a member of the group, I can’t tell – we still have privacy issues to work out!

Dan. There is no administrator! I don’t know who started the group–I was assuming that the PTF discussion group “forum”was simply imported to this MLA commons group, but not sure.  We need an administrator! I am volunteering!  How to go about this? Hey Dan, Join the group.

Hmmm. I can’t join the group because it’s private & there’s no “apply to join this group” button. And I assume you can’t invite me because you’re not an admin. Tomorrow morning I’ll go in & see if I can figure out who’s in charge. Vexing!

Actually, here’s something you can tell me that might help: if you go to the group home page, is there a picture of the admin in the upper right corner? The beta testers group looks like this:

    http://howtouse.hcommons.org/files/2013/01/group-admin-screen.png

and if you move your mouse over the little picture beneath the words “Group Admins” it won’t tell you that’s Kathleen Fitzpatrick (which I think it should), but if you click the picture, you’ll be taken to her page. What do you see there in the PTF page?

Okay, a little more info here. Since this group is an official MLA discussion group, it was set up automatically. Everyone who’s on the executive committees, listed here:

    http://www.mla.org/governance/committees/dgroupexeccomm

should be set to be an admin of the group. Since you’re on the list & you’re not set up as an admin, something’s pretty clearly gone wrong; we’re going to try to fix it. Will report more as soon as I know anything!

Hi, Dan, I had the same question as Margaret. I have a bunch of “groups” that were just transfered over from the old MLA site automatically. These are most, if not all, ghost towns. Is it possible to just opt out of the automatic port or delete them one by one. I would like to have just the groups that I’m adding now.

    Hi Alex,
To opt out of divisions and discussion groups, you’ll actually need to go to mla.org, click on My MLA, and update your memberships there. Of course, we’re hoping that as more members join the Commons, the ghost towns will get new life—but if there are areas you’re no longer working in, you can tidy up your groups all at once at My MLA.
    Hope this helps!

    Hey Anna or Dan.

Still waiting on admins on about 15 of the 19 groups I am in. travel literature, postcolonial, and so many others do not have admin. Autobiography has an administrator, and a couple others, but most do not.
Folks are joining groups, but nothing is happening! An opening summary to welcome new members would be a great thing to have and only an admin can do that. Also a photo instead of a snowflake!

    Thanks!
    Margaret

    Hi Anna,

I had already disabled all of my MLA memberships when I wrote my original post. They still linger in my MLACommons account.  I don’t think they disappear automatically.

Thank you for your response and your help!

    Hi Margaret!

We’re still waiting to hear from our dev people about why admins aren’t being set as admins. Still trying to get to the bottom of this – really sorry for the inconvenience!

    yours,
    Dan

    Hi Alex,

Sorry for the trouble. Yes, we’ve had to forward this glitch to our developers. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s fixed so you can log out and log in to test.

    Thanks for your patience,

    Anna

Hey Dan–Yes, I am now on as admin, but aren’t the other members of the group supposed to be admins also? Thanks VERY much for staying on this…
    Margaret
